Clowns fascinate young children and entertain people of all ages with ridiculous antics. Most often, you see them in the circus.

The extreme popularity of clowns has made it a highly requested tutorial. To fulfill the wishes of our beloved readers, we have created a step-by-step guide on how to draw a clown.

This guide consists of 9 simple instructions coupled with simple illustrations, making it much easier to follow the steps.

How to Draw A Clown

Step 1

Start by drawing a standing oval shape in the center of the paper. This outlines the shape of the clown's head.

When outlining, avoid applying too much pressure with the pencil. It's important to draw with light strokes to easily remove parts of the outline that you may not need later.

You can use guides to ensure that the clown's head is drawn in the center. Just draw an intersecting horizontal and vertical line and use those lines as a guide.

The point where the two lines meet marks the midpoint where you should outline the clown's head.

Step 2

Draw two half circles on each side of the clown's head. This forms the pair of clown ears. Make sure the shape of the ears is consistent.

Remember to add two small curved lines on each ear to create the inner or inner ear. This also adds detail to your drawing and makes it appear more realistic.

Step 3

Clowns usually wear a hat, so that we will draw just that in this step. The hat can be created by drawing a half circle with a slightly flat bottom on the clown's head. This creates the crown of the hat.

Next, draw an oval shape circling the bottom of the crown to form the brim. Next, draw a line across the bottom of the crown to create the hat band that goes around the crown. Remember to erase any parts of the head's outline that overlap inside the hat!

Step 4

You can design any hairstyle you like for the clown's hair! Clowns usually have funny hairstyles, so keep that in mind when drawing the clown's hair.

As you can see in the illustration, we kept the clown's hair simple but distinct.

To create the afro hairstyle, draw an arc line forming a sideways triangle shape on each side of the clown's head. This forms the clown's large, spiky hair.

Step 5

Draw two curved lines under the hat to create the clown's curved eyebrows.

Make sure the brows are even and drawn within the same layer.

Step 6

Draw a perfect circle at the bottom center of the clown's face.

This creates a huge, round nose, one of a clown's most distinctive physical features!

Step 7

Just below the nose, draw two curved lines on top of each other to create a smiling mouth.

Next, outline the outside of the mouth, following its shape. This creates the illusion of smeared lipstick surrounding the clown's mouth.

Step 8

In this step, you can style the clown however you like! As shown in the image above, we've just added a small flower to the back of the clown's head.

Feel free to add other patterns on the hat or some decorations on the hair.

Don't worry about overdoing the design! The more creative the designs, the funnier the clown looks!

Step 9

Draw a giant oval shape that goes just below each eyebrow. Then draw a small circle in each eye with another small circle inside to create the pupil or iris.

Add shadows to the entire pupil and leave out the unshaded iris. This creates a dramatic "glitter eye" effect.

Now that we have successfully drawn a clown, it's time for the most exciting part - coloring your drawing!

This is where you can show off your artistic skills, specifically your ability to mix and match different colors.

What colors you use for the clown is entirely up to you! But here's a tip you might find useful: mix white, yellow, red, and blue colors to create a flesh-toned color. But depending on the complexion you're trying to achieve, you may need more of a particular color.
